Dr Sarah F. Smith

Dr Sarah F. Smith after graduating with a B.Sc. from the University of Sydney, began her career as a biochemist in the Paediatrics Department of the Prince of Wales Hospital. She then worked as a research assistant at Macquarie University and Royal North Shore Hospital, where she set up a database for the neurosurgeons, extending this to North Shore Private and Dalcross Private Hospitals. These were used to monitor surgical outcomes and care of 25,000 neurosurgical patients. She earned a Master of Public Health with Honours, then was awarded the Andrew Olle scholarship to study the changes in survival and care of patients with brain tumours over 25 years, work which was based on her databases and earned her a PhD. She also managed the data of the Australian cases in a cerebrovascular interventional clinical trial based in the U.S. She subsequently worked as a Senior Cancer Information Manager with the NSW Clinical Cancer Registry then as Cancer Services Reporting Manager with the Cancer Institute NSW. Recently Sarah was lead author of the Epidemiology chapter (Setting the Scene) in the Australian Cancer Network’s Glioma Guidelines Project, and co-ordinator of the Australasian Pancreatic Club’s collaborative project creating Australasian Guidelines for the Management of Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency which was released in 2015. She is author on 15 articles in peer-reviewed medical literature and has presented at multiple conferences and meetings. In background to these activities, Sarah has managed a busy academic surgical practice and is a Director of the Cancer Surgery Research Foundation, a registered charity raising funds for pancreatic cancer research.
